Something that I’ve been thinking hard about lately is the idea of taking action and doing things myself, as opposed to waiting on God to do His work in my life. Here is the conclusion that I’ve come to:

Obviously we cannot directly consult with God for every move we make. This would be completely arbitrary, and we would never get anywhere (Imagine asking God for permission for every step you take, or every word you say – this is dumb).

This also applies to times of danger as well. If my car was sliding on the ice, there’s no way I’m letting go of the wheel and just “hoping” that God saves me. I’m going to do everything in my power to regain control.

Where God comes into play in these specific situations is in the preparation. So if every day you wake up and pray to Him for strength and wisdom as you go about your day, you can trust that He will guide you as you make these decisions, so that you might do the right thing with His guidance, without having to directly consult with Him.

Also, I ask God to watch over the things that are out of my control, and trust that He will do so. If I’m sliding on the ice, I trust Him to ensure that a drunk driver does not come through and smash into me while I’m spinning out of control.

On a bigger picture, I also take action when it comes to consciously improving my life. God is not going to make me more money, He is not going to build me a company, give me a degree, or ensure I have good relationships with others. I have to put in the work on those things, and trust that He will guide me as I do so. Again, I ask for strength and wisdom as I undertake those tasks, and for Him to control the things that I cannot.

Now we need to take into effect God’s will. He is all powerful, and if He really does not want you to be successful in your current endeavors then you can work 24/7 and you just won’t make it. However, if you don’t take action and get started, then how will you know if He wants it to happen or not?

You won’t.

Actionable advice:

Before setting out on your day, pray to God and ask Him for the strength to do what needs to be done, and also to carry out His will in your life. Also, pray for the wisdom to discern right from wrong as you go about your day to day activities.

Before you make a big decision, or make a major change in your life, say a prayer similar to this:

”God, I am thinking about making this move in my life. From my perspective, it makes sense, and is the logical thing to do. However, I know that You know more than I am, and I want Your will to be done in my life. Therefore, I am going to make an honest attempt, but I pray that if this is not Your will, that you make it not work out. Also, if it does not work, give me the strength to realize that it was not meant to be, and move on with my life.”

Then take action, doing what needs to be done, and trusting that God has His hand in the action.
