Before this post gets started, I have a disclaimer. I understand that the topic of homosexuality is a touchy subject in the present day. This post will likely have people who read the first 100 words and then start screaming about how I’m a “homophobic”, a “bigot”, and all kinds of other made up words. Those people will be blocked.
My only ask is that you, the reader, read the entire post, from start to finish. You will likely gain a new perspective, which you haven’t heard before. If, at the end, you still disagree with me, then feel free to reach out on Twitter and we can have a conversation.
That being said, let’s get into it:
“Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God” 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 KJV.
The terms “fornicator” (sexually immoral), “adulterer” (someone who looks upon another with lust), and “effeminate” (homosexual) are the main focus as of right now.
Therefore, according to this passage, homosexuality is a sin, and is wrong in the eyes of God.
Moreover, it should not be encouraged, celebrated, or viewed as correct because the person was “born that way”. It is a sin, nothing more, nothing less.
There’s no other way to put it. Anyone reading this post with the intention of justifying homosexuality is in the wrong place.
However, the Bible also says “Love thy neighbor as thyself” (Matthew 22:39). Just because someone is homosexual, does not mean that anyone should hate them, be afraid of them, or treat them any differently than any other person. They still deserve to hear the Gospel, to be given a chance to be saved.
God still loves people in the LGBT community, even if He does not like the things they do or the way they live their lives. So why would straight people act any differently?
Now let’s look at the rest of this verse.
How many of us have ever put something before God? Perhaps we skipped church to watch the game? That’s idolatry.
How many of us have ever been drunk?
How many have stolen something?
Looked at someone and said to yourself “I’d like to sleep with them”?
Seen something that your friend had and thought “What I wouldn’t give to have one of those”?
The list goes on.
My point is, no one (except for Jesus, of course) has ever gone through life and held up to all of the standards listed in this passage. We are ALL sinners, and none of us are perfect. This brings me back to my point: straight people are no better, in the eyes of God, than gay people, so why would we act like we are? Why would we hate gay people? That would be hypocritical.
In this current society, people are forced to take the extreme. We are forced to pick a side; we can choose to show support for the LGBT community, or we are labeled as “homophobic”.
I like to take the middle ground: I do not agree with the choices that they have made, and I do not believe that God does, either. However, I firmly believe that God still loves them, and expects us to love them also. In fact, He expects us to love them so much, that we tell them the Gospel, so that He can give them the greatest gift of all: Eternal Life.
Thus leads me to my favorite part. 1 Corinthians 6:11 says “And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God”.
Wow! Jesus gives us a clear way out. We can be washed clean by His blood and be free of our sins. All we have to do is believe in Him, accept Him into our hearts, and ask Him for forgiveness. He will change your life.
